UK Evaluates Luxury Properties for Potential Economic Impact of New Tax.

The UK government is planning to implement a new council tax surcharge known as the “mansion tax,” which targets high-value properties. This measure is set to affect properties valued over £2 million, with the tax coming into effect in April 2028. To accurately assess these properties, valuation officers are authorized to conduct inspections focusing on internal features and measurements to establish a home’s value.

The proposed surcharge introduces a tiered system where owners of properties valued between £2 million and £2.5 million will incur an annual payment of £2,500. For homes valued up to £3.5 million, the charge increases to £3,500, while those valued between £3.5 million and £5 million will see a £5,000 charge. Properties exceeding £5 million will face the highest surcharge at £7,500. This surcharge will be in addition to the existing council tax and is anticipated to rise annually in accordance with inflation rates.

Inspections carried out by valuation officers will consider various factors such as the size of the property, architectural details, as well as the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and storeys. Property owners who obstruct these valuation inspections could incur a fine of £200, while those who fail to provide necessary information without a valid reason could face penalties reaching up to £500.

The government has emphasized that these inspections will be conducted with the agreement of property owners and will adhere strictly to official guidelines. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure fair taxation of high-value properties, aligning property taxes more closely with property values.
