Instagram to End Private Message Encryption in May — What It Means for You

by admin477351

Starting May 8, 2026, Instagram users will no longer have the option to send end-to-end encrypted direct messages. Meta announced the change quietly through an update on its help page, catching many users off guard. The decision marks a retreat from a privacy feature that was rolled out less than three years ago.

Mark Zuckerberg had promised in 2019 that end-to-end encryption would be available across all Meta platforms. The company began implementing the feature on Instagram in 2023, but user adoption remained disappointingly low. Meta cited this lack of uptake as the primary reason for pulling the plug on the feature.

With the change taking effect in May, Meta will gain the ability to read the contents of all Instagram direct messages. Before this, only non-encrypted messages were accessible to the platform. This shift raises serious questions about how the company might use that data in the future, including for advertising and AI training purposes.

Child safety organizations and global law enforcement agencies had for years pushed Meta to remove the encryption, arguing it shielded criminal activity. The FBI, Interpol, the UK’s National Crime Agency, and Australia’s federal police were among those who voiced concerns. With encryption now gone, these agencies may find it easier to work with Instagram in investigations.

Digital rights advocates, however, warn this is a step backward for online freedom. Critics argue Meta should have improved the encryption experience rather than eliminating it. Users who still want encrypted messaging are being directed to WhatsApp, which will retain the feature.
