15% Tariff on Polysilicon Imports Aims to Fortify US Manufacturing Sector

In a strategic move to bolster domestic manufacturing, US President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of a 15% tariff on imported goods made with polysilicon, which is essential for the production of semiconductors and solar panels. This tariff, set to take effect on December 4, is part of a broader effort to reduce the nation’s dependency on China for critical materials. Polysilicon is a highly refined form of silicon used in the creation of semiconductors that drive technologies such as artificial intelligence and data centers, as well as in the production of solar cells and panels. Currently, China leads the world in polysilicon production.

The US government’s new policy establishes minimum import prices for various forms of polysilicon, including $21 per kilogram for the raw material, $100 per kilogram for polysilicon ingots and wafers, and specific rates per watt for solar-related products: $0.22 for solar cells and $0.38 for solar modules and panels. These measures aim to enhance the competitiveness of domestic polysilicon production while securing vital supply chains that are crucial for both economic and national security.

China has voiced its disapproval of the tariff, accusing the United States of improperly using national security as a pretext to limit Chinese business operations. Chinese officials have also cautioned that such protectionist policies could strain trade relations between the two nations. Meanwhile, China’s export sector, particularly in electronics and artificial intelligence-related products, continues to experience robust growth.

In the United States, the polysilicon industry is supported by two major production facilities: Hemlock Semiconductor, located in Michigan, and Wacker Chemie, situated in Tennessee. The new tariff policy also opens the door for government incentives to encourage investments in domestic polysilicon manufacturing and related sectors. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the US administration to reinforce the commercial viability of homegrown production capabilities.
