In a significant shift within the European aviation sector, Istanbul Airport surpassed Heathrow Airport in passenger numbers for the month of July. Data reveals that Heathrow experienced a footfall of 7.86 million passengers, while Istanbul Airport handled a slightly higher count of 8.15 million. This change in rankings marks a notable moment, as Heathrow’s figures fell by 1.5% compared to July of the previous year, whereas Istanbul enjoyed a 2.3% increase in traffic.
The drop in passenger numbers at Heathrow has been partially linked to disruptions stemming from ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. This situation has reignited discussions around the necessity for the UK government to endorse Heathrow’s plan for a third runway. Currently, Heathrow operates with two runways that are nearing maximum capacity. The proposed £33 billion expansion aims to substantially boost the airport’s capacity, potentially accommodating around 150 million passengers annually.
Officials at Heathrow have emphasized that these latest statistics underline the urgent need for additional capacity to enhance the UK’s global connectivity, as well as its trade and tourism sectors. Since its inauguration in 2018, Istanbul Airport has capitalized on its larger site and round-the-clock operations. The airport currently utilizes three runways, with plans to add a fourth by the end of 2026. This strategic advantage has evidently played a role in its ability to outpace Heathrow in recent months.
While Heathrow grapples with these challenges, other UK airports are experiencing growth. London Stansted and Manchester airports both reported their busiest July to date, with passenger numbers hitting 3.1 million and 3.4 million, respectively. These figures highlight a varied landscape within the UK’s aviation network, with some airports thriving despite the hurdles faced by Heathrow.
